Where is the Diamond?

Sometimes the unexpected can have a wonderfully surprising effect. Here are a few designs that through unusual placement of the Diamond make a simple design stand out.

A plain band if you look at it from one side – and with 9 little Diamonds when you turn it around!

One single Princess Cut Diamond on each side of the lady’s band. Both look the same on the finger, but when you look a bit closer you find this precious detail.

Add a modern edge to a plain band – Princess Cut Diamond placed off-centre.

Matching rather than Identical

Many of you are unsure whether it is ok to choose a pair of wedding rings that are not identical. Well, there is actually no right answer – the choice is up to the both of you. Many people choose the same design for the bride and groom, but as you know we are made up of different shapes and sizes, so the same design, might not give the same results.The same shape of ring, but a slimmer one for the lady to go in proportion to her finger size. 

Majority of you, choose to make matching bands, rather than identical. And matching is a term that gives you a lot more flexibility. Here are a few examples of how to show that you are a pair, without wearing the exact same ring.

While using the same colour, this couple chose designs that suit their respective size and taste.

His works well as a contemporary statement ring with matte finish. Hers borrows the same element of round squarishness, but made to be worn together with her Diamond engagement ring.

Matching colour and finishing, but with different shapes. The lady’s band required square edges to fit the Princess cut Ruby. He chose a rounded band which he thought looked better on his finger.  

This couple chose to make their rings in an overall same shape, but with Diamonds for her.

As you can see, the options are endless when you open up to the idea of matching rather than identical wedding rings. As they say, opposites attract, and these are examples of how stunning different designs can look together. It also means that one party does not need to compromise on their wishes, as you can both get the design that you like.

Men’s Fashion, in Gold and Silver

Be it wedding rings, or ‘just’ for fashion, men are becoming more creative with their jewellery. Gone are the days when men will get the thinnest or the most basic wedding ring, just because they have to. A ring can also be a statement, as you can see in these designs, custom made in the last few months.

Chunky Men’s Ring with Round Diamond. Unpolished White Gold leaves the yellow tone of the original colour and makes this design that extra bit special. What is even more amazing, is that the tiny gap on the side of the ring, is positioned to reveal the entire laser inscription on the diamond girdle. Now, that will give you an idea of how small those numbers really are. Another chunky design with a square Diamond to match the shape. Matte Finish for that rough, manly look.

Same shape in a much smaller version – for the pinky. Can be set with a gemstone of choice, and if you have a family crest or want to engrave your initials, that will sit just fine, too.

Just a Minute: Anna Nilsson of Subclip Photography

We met up with our friend Anna, a wedding photographer based in Stockholm. And apart from admiring her beautiful wedding photographs, we were curious to see all the wedding rings that she has shot and find out what Swedish couples have been using to seal their love this year.

“One of the trends this year, has been to wear two rings of the same design together” explains Anna.

Since Swedish people often wear a band even for engagement, a ‘stacking’ effect is very common.

Yellow gold is still popular in Sweden. Here with a Princess Cut Solitaire and Eternity Ring for Her and Plain Rounded Band for Him.

Another trend – stamped names on the outside of the rings, paired with a flat band with matte finish for a contemporary look.

Our Wedding Rings

Since choosing your wedding rings can be a tricky yet important decision in your wedding planning, we’ll give you some insights into our own discussions.

Chris designed this engagement ring as a secret and threw it in the sea. Read more about the proposal on Wedding Guide Asia.

According to Swedish custom, both the lady – and the man – wear engagement rings from the time of engagement. So following the surprise proposal, we wanted Chris to wear a ring as well. The man will usually wear the same ring for the wedding, while the bride adds a second ring to the finger.

Since we designed Chris’ ring before considering wedding bands, his engagement/wedding ring matches Sara’s engagement ring – not the wedding ring.

When it came to Sara’s wedding ring, the choices were slightly limited because of the width of the engagement ring. The new ring needed to be slim to even fit the finger! Being a fan of 2-tone, Sara considered getting a very slim flat band in Yellow Gold to add to the first one, but did not want it to be too chunky and heavy looking.Checking the mockup to ensure that the size is right before setting the Diamonds

In the end, the result was a ring that was the total opposite of the engagement ring. A combination of a chunky, modern Engagement band and a vintage inspired delicate Eternity Ring.Two very different styles, yet somehow matching….

The Diamond Eternity Ring was made following the thickness of the engagement ring so that they would fit nicely together. Now, they fit so snug, that people often think that it is all one ring – and that must be a good sign that they are well matched…. :)

A Classic Never Goes Out Of Style

If you have ever tried finding a plain yet well-cut shirt you will know how difficult it can be. The plain ones are often of poor quality that are not built to last and the rest will have some funny print or detail spoiling the clean look.

People have their own personal definition of what a classic design is. We like this one: [Simple; elegant, lasting].

Lasting is a factor especially relevant when it comes to wedding rings. Made to be worn often and for many years, wedding rings should reflect who you are, but do not necessarily need to be statement pieces. When designing wedding bands, it can be good to choose a design that you will not have to ‘match’ your other jewellery or clothes with. Although trends do not come and go as frequently in jewellery as they do in fashion, it can be risky to choose a design based on trends, as it can become outdated. A white shirt never goes our of style – shoulder pads do.

Beautiful Birthstones

As a child, I used to love my birthstone. It was such a pretty purple colour. Most of all, I knew it was special because it was just for me. I might have grown out of the magical beauty of it, but the Amethyst is still my favourite stone. A Ring for All Eternity

Diamond Eternity Rings are a popular choice for Wedding Rings. But finding the right one can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. So where do we start?  If you are planning to wear the Eternity Ring together with your Engagement Ring, you will also need to keep in mind how they will sit next to each other.  Find which type of setting you prefer. The most frequently used settings are Claw (or prong) setting and Channel Setting. In the former, the claws hold the Diamonds in place and are visible upon first glance. The latter, holds the Diamonds by two Gold (or Platinum) bars on either side, so there are no visible claws.

Above are two types of Claw Settings. The left one with clearly visible claws, the right one with smaller claws and covered sides for a more solid and even look.

You can choose Round or Princess Cut Diamonds for a Channel setting. The main difference between these two options is that the Round Diamonds leave a visible gap between them, while the princess Cut Diamonds can fit exactly next to each-other creating an ‘unbroken’ line of Diamonds.

Still confused? What it all boils down to is personal preference, so you just need to find the option that appeals to you the most.

Just a Minute: Kevin & Cheryl

Kevin Seah is a fashion designer who has made a name for himself creating couture and bridal gowns. Last year he extended his services to a men’s readymade and bespoke line. Recently he also landed regional distributorship for Alfred Sargent shoes and a wide range of fantastic quality European fabrics.

Cheryl Ow Hui is a make up artist for bridal, film, commercials and special effects, in addition to training professional classes and workshops at Make Up Forever.

Kevin custom made both of their outfits and Cheryl was in charge of her own makeup and hair. This DIY couple is arguably Singapore’s most stylish duo! And it comes as no surprise that their engagement and wedding rings are something out of the ordinary. We wanted to know more.

MTD: Congratulations on tying the knot! You recently had a small intimate wedding affair and we will have to wait until next year for the big party! A few questions for the happy couple…

Diamond solitaires are the most popular rings for engagements. What made you choose a Blue Sapphire for yours?

Cheryl: The Blue Sapphire has an air of mystery to it and I have always been fascinated with it.  My first pair of earrings were given to me by my mother. It was a flower design with a tiny little sapphire in it and it was the prettiest thing in the whole world to me at that point.  I suppose that’s another reason why I love the Blue Sapphire, it brings back lovely memories for me.

Your wedding outfits follow a vintage theme and so did your engagement ring. Please share your thoughts.

CheryI: I find vintage objects have more character, and soul. Even women back then had so much more style and they took great pride in doing their hair and make up.  Nowadays it’s a wet mop of hair running into the MRT. I wanted my engagement ring to represent me and the things I like.  When people look at my ring I want them to say ‘Wow Cheryl, its  so you” and not ‘wah so big hor how much did he pay for it?’  It’s your engagement ring for crying out loud!!

Kevin, having many years experience of designing wedding gowns, you must have seen quite a few options for rings as well. What were you looking for in your own wedding rings?

Kevin: I wanted something simple, timeless and unique, hence the brushed finish.

Can Wedding Rings be made in Silver?

When on the subject of wedding rings, most people will think of Gold or Platinum as the default materials. But are there other options? Muslim men, for example, are not supposed to wear gold rings and naturally have to turn to other options. This can make their wedding ring shopping more difficult as most shops in Singapore carry only gold.

Most designs that are found in Gold, can also be made in Platinum or Silver. So what is the difference between these materials? Platinum is the hardest metal and because of its durability it is commonly used in wedding jewellery. Platinum is also more rare than Gold or Silver and as a result fetches a much higher price, which makes it a no-go for buyers on a budget. An affordable option is Sterling Silver, which can also be set with stones.

Silver Rings can be made into a variety of designs, such as flat bands, rings with rounded edges, rings with gemstones or chunky plain bands.

Even a plain band can have variations. Above in Matte Finish and Glossy Finish

With Silver having a lower price tag than Gold or Platinum, it opens up design opportunities that might otherwise be limited by price. Add a fancy birthstone, a symbolic number of Diamonds, or make a solid broad ring that is stylish as well as meaningful.
