Celebrity Engagements: The return of ‘Diana’

The British love their royal gossip, so when Prince William, oldest son of Prince Charles and the late Lady Diana, recently proposed to his longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton, we can only imagine the excitement that the British magazines were experiencing.

William proposed to his Kate – not with a huge Diamond from a private jeweller – but with the same ring that his father used to seal the engagement to his mother, Diana, in 1981.  Since that famous proposal, the setting has become a modern classic and is commonly known as a ‘Diana’ design. Part of royal jeweller Garrard’s collection, Diana picked the ring out herself, thus making the design wildly popular for years to come.

It appears as William and Kate’s engagement has made this design Oh-so-right once again. Sapphire jewellers in the UK and America are reporting a huge surge in enquiries, even in this short time since the engagement was announced.

The classic Sapphire setting with an oval centrepiece surrounded with Diamonds can also be made with Rubies or Emeralds, and are often used in matching earring and pendant designs.

Gold and Silver have collected various pieces inspired by Diana. They will be available at the Gold & Silver Clearance Sale mentioned in previous post.

Creative Director Liza Lim on Jewellery Trends

Those of you who have followed us over the years, will know of our mother-company Gold & Silver (started by Chris’ grandfather back in 1946, and run by his parents, Lawrence and Liza Lim for the last 30 years). Times have changed, our company is evolving. To make room for the new More than Diamonds, we will be clearing all jewellery items from Gold & Silver during our Christmas Sale.

Gold & Silver 20th Anniversary in Paragon

In this process, we wanted to find out more about the jewellery trends throughout the years and what to look out for in future. The clear choice was to go straight to the source, Liza Lim, Creative Director of Gold and Silver, chief designer and purchaser for the last 30 years.

What kind of jewellery has been the most popular throughout the years? Diamonds have definitely been the most popular throughout the years, but a large number of expats and tourists like precious stones like Sapphire and Ruby. They are especially popular to commemorate a special occasion, like child birth or an anniversary.

Liza's jewellery designs grace fashion magazines regularly

What is your personal favourite? I have always liked Jade, because of the beautiful green colour. And as a Chinese, Jade is always close to the heart.

From sketch to ready piece - multi-coloured Jade Earrings with South Sea Pearls

Any recommendations for this sale? Jewellery is very personal and each person has their own taste and preference. When I design jewellery, I make sure that each piece is the best it can be. I select quality gemstones and control the craftsmanship myself. After that, it’s just about finding the person who falls in love with that particular piece.

Have the customers changed since the move from Paragon to Tong Building? Our customers have accumulated since we opened shop in Paragon 25 years ago. Apart from the tourists and passers-by we had in Paragon, we have many loyal customers who have followed us to this new location. Now in Tong Building, the customers generally know better what they are looking for before they even come in.

Liza demonstrating the versatility of her jewellery

What is your speciality? I have designed most of my Earrings and Pendants detachable with versatile wearing in mind. It can be a Diamond stud that you wear on its own for work, and add a South Sea Pearl for a function. There are several pieces that you can mix and match, so that you can wear the colours you need as well as the right level of dressiness to suit the occasion.

Detachable Earrings to suit all occasions

What do people usually buy as their first piece of jewellery? And what comes after? Singaporeans like pampering themselves, so when they come up to a certain age, they like investing in a piece of genuine jewellery. Pendants are often the first choice, although many like rings because they are more visible and easy to wear everyday. Most Europeans will buy a simple pair of earrings as their first piece and wait to buy a ring until they receive an engagement ring.

Celebrity Diamonds: Asscher Cut

Looking to Hollywood for inspiration when buying an engagement ring might not be the best way to find something within your budget. However, celebrities are trendsetters and often dare to be different, so a little stargazing can help you with ideas. It might come as a surprise to some people, that while most celebrity Diamonds are huge, they are often fancy cut, meaning not Round Brilliant. Celebrity engagement rings come in a mix of vintage rings retrieved through auctions, and new rings that are custom made to look vintage.  For that perfect art deco look, explore the Asscher Cut Diamond.

Liz Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor is famous for her numerous engagement rings, all of them being more than double-digits in size! In 1968 Richard Burton gave Taylor The Krupp Diamond, a 33.19ct Asscher Cut flanked with Tapered Diamonds. Today, more than 40 years later, the Asscher cut Diamond is as popular as ever and seen on many young celebrities.

The Asscher cut was created in 1902. It has its own characteristics, but is often called a square Emerald cut. It has cropped edges, which makes it look almost like an octagon. Being a step cut stone, the facets are longer, hence not as brilliant as a Round Diamond.

The beauty of the Asscher cut lies in its unique shape, which makes it stunning even in a plain solitaire setting or surrounded with Diamonds, like Ashley Simpson’s engagement ring, above.

Take a look inside your Jewellery

When you buy clothes you go over the seams to check the quality and ensure that the garment is well made. When buying jewellery, check the inside – or even the back.

As mentioned in a previous post, Artika Sulaiman says the favourite part of her ring is under the Diamond. It is crafted with intricate detail which makes it elegant, while also ensuring the security required for a precious piece of jewellery.

This kind of ‘nested’ setting is of course not available for all types of jewellery, but there are other ways to check the quality. Gold price is at an all-time high and naturally  jewellery makers are conserving. Many choose to ‘carve’ out some of the gold from the inside of the band of a ring or the back of a pendant because it keeps the jewellery affordable. However, it is important to make sure that the band remains thick enough to handle everyday wear and that the design is unaffected.

You can feel if a ring is light and seems breakable just by holding it, and there is definitely a difference between jewellery and jewellery –  even if the materials are the same.  As with clothing, that little extra is created by the details that cannot be seen by others, but can be felt by the wearer. No one knows that your jacket is lined with the finest italian fabric, but you know it and you can feel it. Same goes for a piece of jewellery. If you know that you are wearing quality and the person who made it put that little extra into it, it makes a world of difference for you as the wearer.

He said, She said: Shan Wee & Artika Sulaiman

Shan Wee and Artika Sulaiman are a fun-loving couple who are currently planning for their grand wedding to be held next year. We were so excited, we just had to find out from Shan about his nerve-wracking ordeal of finding the right ring for his Ashton Kutcher-style surprise proposal.

Shan Wee, 28, is a Radio DJ. You can catch him on weekdays with Rozz from 8pm to midnight on 987FM.

Shan, you bought a pretty unusual ring with a cushion cut Diamond. What is the reason?

2 years into our relationship, Tika conveniently started dropping hints by frequently surfing ring design websites right next to me on her laptop. One day she exclaimed, “I want one which is not square, and not round” and voila, Shan’s brilliantly astute mind decided on a cushion cut.

How did you go about choosing the perfect ring?

One day I opened my email inbox to see a message from Tika titled “ideas”. On further inspection, it was just one photo image of a ring, and that picture became my sherpa, guiding me through the Mount Everest of jewellery. Basically I went to our friends at More Than Diamonds, showed them my sherpa, and they got to work on creating the perfect ring.

What were your most important points to satisfy when looking for the engagement ring?

Tika had stressed that she would emigrate and never talk to me again if I presented her with a ring that had any kind of life like element – a dolphin holding a sapphire, an eagle clutching a ruby in its talons, things of that nature. So avoiding my natural inclination towards that, was the most important decision.

Tell us about the proposal!

The legendary film star Ashton Kutcher once said “to really surprise or prank someone, you have to do it first thing in the morning”. With his wise words in mind, I decided my proposal would be done at 8 am. I slipped out of bed and quietly reminded Tika that I was heading to an early work appointment. 15 minutes later I called her on the phone, to let her know I had arranged a surprise, and that she had to go online to view it. At a domain name that I bought, she found a video photomontage, where the soundtrack was none other than myself – playing guitar and singing a heartfelt ballad about our lives together. The last line of the song was “now go out to the balcony…”.  She stumbled out to our 4th floor balcony and as her eyes adjusted to the morning sun, she noticed an unusual sight on the ground floor. On large printed sheets were the letters WILL YOU MARRY ME? At this moment, the nervous but gallant proposer entered the apartment and went down on one knee on the balcony.

What were your expectations when presenting the ring?

I think that all guys believe that every single aspect of the proposal must be 100% perfect, because this is ‘the moment she has been waiting for all her life’. As my proposal went smoothly, I was expecting the Hollywood moment where she tears a little and cries out YES YES YES! In reality, shock and surprise were the immediate reactions, rather than unbridled joy!

Do you have any tips for nervous boyfriends out there who don’t have a clue what to buy?

I was very fortunate in that Tika gave me some direction, because I would have been quite hopeless trying to find a needle in a haystack. I suppose my advice would be to try and wrestle such information out of her, subtly, and I think this is much better than ‘going shopping with her best friend’ because as much as girls think they share style, in reality I don’t think they do, and you can’t base such an important decision on a third party’s opinion.

Great pointers and a wonderful proposal story from Shan. But what was the reaction from Tika, his object of affection?

Hi Tika, could you please introduce yourself to our readers.
Artika, 28, my card says Director.  I don’t really direct anything since my partner and I do everything ourselves. I started Sloane Elizabeth Robertson, a twice-yearly shopping spree extravaganza featuring cult brands not readily available in Singapore.  We have now taken that online and launched www.oliviamia.com – a members only shopping destination.
I am mostly fun.  Definitely rebellious, and like to laugh A LOT!

Shan custom made a Cushion Cut Diamond Ring. What do you think about his choice?

It’s perfect.  I’m not a square because that’s just too rigid.  But a rounded square?  How awesome is that?! It’s like saying ‘Listen.. this marriage stuff is serious, so you have to have a serious shape, but let’s just ‘take the edge off’ and make it a rounded square’.  I didn’t know what a Cushion Cut was, but when I saw that my Diamond was not just square and not just round, I was like.. “LEGIT”

Was the ring what you had expected?

YES.  Well no.  Kind of.  I could never imagine a ring this pretty.  I’ve seen the vintage/modern look with diamond in the middle and diamonds around it.  I’ve always found it not so traditional, but yet soulful.  But I have not seen one this pretty.  I actually have to say that my favourite part is looking at it from the bottom.  The prongs that supports it all makes it look so old school, they support the frame all the way around.  It is not bulky, it’s so vintage.  I’m sorry, but there is no way I am passing this ring down to my children!

Tell us about the proposal!

One morning I woke up irritated because Shan kept on calling me.  And finally I picked up saying  WHAT DO YOU WANT?

I went to the website as he suggested, a bit annoyed.  I saw what he had done and thought ‘Awww that’s a nice surprise’… But when he said in the video “Now I ask you to go to the balcony” I went back to irritable mode thinking ‘Arrgh, now I have to get up’.  So I got up to look for my present.  I then looked over the balcony and saw big letters by the pool saying WILL YOU MARRY ME?  I proceeded to ignore it and looked around some more for my present but found nothing.

Then Shan came bursting through the door and proposed to me.  This is when I had an outer body experience. I knew it was happening, I could see it, but really, I didn’t believe it.  So the whole time Shan was talking, I didn’t really hear him. All I was thinking was WHAT IS GOING ON???

Afterward, Shan said “Look at the ring!”  I honestly couldn’t, for fear that I would wear some kind of Darth Vader inspired ring – or worse – some kind of Dolphin jumping mid air clinging on to a blue stone.  Later, I went to the bathroom to look without Shan’s presence.  Just in case it was horrid, I didn’t want him to see the expression on my face.  But when I saw it, I went out the door and said IT’S PRETTY!!! YOU DID GOOD YOU DID GOOD!

What were you expecting from Shan in the way of a proposal?

I thought that he would honestly play some kind of prank on me.

Do you have any tips for nervous boyfriends out there who don’t have a clue what to buy?

Well… Shan told me that when he went to Chris and Sara at More than Diamonds, he was asked to describe my jewellery style and said “Egyptian”. So Thank God for Sara and Chris!

My advice would be, ask her friends what they think she would like, bring some of her jewellery to Chris and Sara, and they will help you out… A LOT!

But honestly, one major rule of thumb for me, which I think would be true with most girls: do not buy anything that resembles living things e.g. Dolphin.

A Ring for All Eternity

Diamond Eternity Rings are a popular choice for Wedding Rings. But finding the right one can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. So where do we start?  If you are planning to wear the Eternity Ring together with your Engagement Ring, you will also need to keep in mind how they will sit next to each other.  Find which type of setting you prefer. The most frequently used settings are Claw (or prong) setting and Channel Setting. In the former, the claws hold the Diamonds in place and are visible upon first glance. The latter, holds the Diamonds by two Gold (or Platinum) bars on either side, so there are no visible claws.

Above are two types of Claw Settings. The left one with clearly visible claws, the right one with smaller claws and covered sides for a more solid and even look.

You can choose Round or Princess Cut Diamonds for a Channel setting. The main difference between these two options is that the Round Diamonds leave a visible gap between them, while the princess Cut Diamonds can fit exactly next to each-other creating an ‘unbroken’ line of Diamonds.

Still confused? What it all boils down to is personal preference, so you just need to find the option that appeals to you the most.

Just a Minute: Kevin & Cheryl

Kevin Seah is a fashion designer who has made a name for himself creating couture and bridal gowns. Last year he extended his services to a men’s readymade and bespoke line. Recently he also landed regional distributorship for Alfred Sargent shoes and a wide range of fantastic quality European fabrics.

Cheryl Ow Hui is a make up artist for bridal, film, commercials and special effects, in addition to training professional classes and workshops at Make Up Forever.

Kevin custom made both of their outfits and Cheryl was in charge of her own makeup and hair. This DIY couple is arguably Singapore’s most stylish duo! And it comes as no surprise that their engagement and wedding rings are something out of the ordinary. We wanted to know more.

MTD: Congratulations on tying the knot! You recently had a small intimate wedding affair and we will have to wait until next year for the big party! A few questions for the happy couple…

Diamond solitaires are the most popular rings for engagements. What made you choose a Blue Sapphire for yours?

Cheryl: The Blue Sapphire has an air of mystery to it and I have always been fascinated with it.  My first pair of earrings were given to me by my mother. It was a flower design with a tiny little sapphire in it and it was the prettiest thing in the whole world to me at that point.  I suppose that’s another reason why I love the Blue Sapphire, it brings back lovely memories for me.

Your wedding outfits follow a vintage theme and so did your engagement ring. Please share your thoughts.

CheryI: I find vintage objects have more character, and soul. Even women back then had so much more style and they took great pride in doing their hair and make up.  Nowadays it’s a wet mop of hair running into the MRT. I wanted my engagement ring to represent me and the things I like.  When people look at my ring I want them to say ‘Wow Cheryl, its  so you” and not ‘wah so big hor how much did he pay for it?’  It’s your engagement ring for crying out loud!!

Kevin, having many years experience of designing wedding gowns, you must have seen quite a few options for rings as well. What were you looking for in your own wedding rings?

Kevin: I wanted something simple, timeless and unique, hence the brushed finish.

Can Wedding Rings be made in Silver?

When on the subject of wedding rings, most people will think of Gold or Platinum as the default materials. But are there other options? Muslim men, for example, are not supposed to wear gold rings and naturally have to turn to other options. This can make their wedding ring shopping more difficult as most shops in Singapore carry only gold.

Most designs that are found in Gold, can also be made in Platinum or Silver. So what is the difference between these materials? Platinum is the hardest metal and because of its durability it is commonly used in wedding jewellery. Platinum is also more rare than Gold or Silver and as a result fetches a much higher price, which makes it a no-go for buyers on a budget. An affordable option is Sterling Silver, which can also be set with stones.

Silver Rings can be made into a variety of designs, such as flat bands, rings with rounded edges, rings with gemstones or chunky plain bands.

Even a plain band can have variations. Above in Matte Finish and Glossy Finish

With Silver having a lower price tag than Gold or Platinum, it opens up design opportunities that might otherwise be limited by price. Add a fancy birthstone, a symbolic number of Diamonds, or make a solid broad ring that is stylish as well as meaningful.

Solid as a Rock

Let’s face it girls, we all want to round off the proposal with a special ring for all to see. But does it need to be a ‘Rock’? Especially in Asia, people seem to focus a lot on the size of the Diamond. How many times have you heard people asking to “See the Rock” when a friend got engaged? We often expect huge impressive stones that show how much our boyfriends love us. Not only does this set a lot of pressure on the guys, as well as the relationship – it is also quite predictable.

Surely, love and commitment is best reflected through uniqueness of style rather than the size of a Diamond?

Your relationship and your personalities are unlike any other in any case. So why choose an engagement ring – the symbol of commitment - that is conventional? When the design is formal, then everything really does boil down to the issue of size…

At the same time, we often hear, in our line of work, customers wishing for a special design for their wedding ring because it stands for something special. So why are the requirements for an engagement ring still so one-sided?

50s housewife

One reason that you often hear is that the engagement ring was a ‘security blanket’ for the lady, who had to stop working and dedicate her life to the marriage and family. But in 2010, how many women do you know who live their lives like that? Marriages have changed, the status of men and women have changed. So why have the notions about engagement rings not changed? Or have they?

Let us know what you think…

Dressing up your Diamond

Ever wonder how different settings affect the look of a Diamond ring? Here are two Diamonds of 1.50ct, with the same dimensions in two different ring settings.

Diamond Setting

Our two examples here are a Classic 6-claw setting with a thin slightly tapered band on the left, and a 4-claw setting with a rounded broad band on the right.

As you can see, there are many factors that play part in the look of each setting. A thin band, accentuates the Diamond and makes it look bigger. But on the other hand, the thick claws on the 4-claw setting, make the overall effect bigger. Together with the broader band, it is a more solid looking ring, where the 6-claw is a feminine classic!
