I am Dragon

We know that there were many weddings last year, especially on the popular dates of 11-11-11 and 20-11-2011. But we have also been told that the large number of weddings last year could have something to do with these couples planning to have Dragon-babies. The Dragon is, according to the Chinese Zodiac, an ambitious and determined sign and people who are lucky enough to be born Dragons, tend to be very proud of it – And so they should. Elegant yet powerful, who wouldn’t want to be one?

As a tribute to all Dragons, we have designed the Goldilocks™ I am Dragon.  Since Dragons like things their own way, we have made two options to choose from. The Chinese character for Dragon [Long] on a White Gold Chain makes a clean every-day piece.

For the Dragon with a bit more attitude; a 2-tone Pendant with a golden Long and a strong White Gold plate to match this fierce animal.

The Dragon also goes beautifully with gemstones – maybe even a birthstone!

Every Diamond Counts

One of the important parts of custom designing, is getting the Diamond sizes and proportions right. Diamond accents are ‘supporting actors’ so they should enhance, but not over- shine the star of the show – the centrepiece Diamond.Finding the right proportion between the centrepiece Diamond, surrounding stones and the Diamonds on the band.

When we have decided on the right size for the design, we select the Diamonds.

An example of a stunning result! Large centrepiece can look even bigger with the right selection of surrounding Diamonds.Another reason to custom make is that you can make the wedding or anniversary ring match the size of Diamonds and band exactly.

As you can see, the size of the surrounding Diamonds, affect the design more than the size of the centrepiece Diamond does.  Just as in Hollywood, it is often the supporting actors, who make a good  film great.

Men’s Fashion, in Gold and Silver

Be it wedding rings, or ‘just’ for fashion, men are becoming more creative with their jewellery. Gone are the days when men will get the thinnest or the most basic wedding ring, just because they have to. A ring can also be a statement, as you can see in these designs, custom made in the last few months.

Chunky Men’s Ring with Round Diamond. Unpolished White Gold leaves the yellow tone of the original colour and makes this design that extra bit special. What is even more amazing, is that the tiny gap on the side of the ring, is positioned to reveal the entire laser inscription on the diamond girdle. Now, that will give you an idea of how small those numbers really are. Another chunky design with a square Diamond to match the shape. Matte Finish for that rough, manly look.

Same shape in a much smaller version – for the pinky. Can be set with a gemstone of choice, and if you have a family crest or want to engrave your initials, that will sit just fine, too.

Just a Minute: Anna Nilsson of Subclip Photography

We met up with our friend Anna, a wedding photographer based in Stockholm. And apart from admiring her beautiful wedding photographs, we were curious to see all the wedding rings that she has shot and find out what Swedish couples have been using to seal their love this year.

“One of the trends this year, has been to wear two rings of the same design together” explains Anna.

Since Swedish people often wear a band even for engagement, a ‘stacking’ effect is very common.

Yellow gold is still popular in Sweden. Here with a Princess Cut Solitaire and Eternity Ring for Her and Plain Rounded Band for Him.

Another trend – stamped names on the outside of the rings, paired with a flat band with matte finish for a contemporary look.

We are looking forward to seeing some colourful autumn weddings on  Subclip.se  soon! The website has not been translated into English, but if you email anna@subclip.se she will be happy to help you. She is also available for destination weddings, so whether you want to have your wedding shoot in Sweden, or add a Swedish eye to your Singaporean wedding, Anna might just be the photographer for you…

What shape are you?

Do you love Diamonds but  are not sure that you want a Round one? Fancy Cut Diamonds might not be as common as the Round Brilliant ones, but they are definitely just as striking.

You probably already know the Round Diamond. Now, let’s take a look at some fancy shapes. We took a few snap shots of loose Diamonds to show what they look like before they are set. This way, we can really see the different properties of the different cuts.

The technical term for Princess Cut is Square Modified Brilliant, which means that it is a Brilliant Cut Stone, like the round one, but with the top part cut into a square shape. Because of its brilliance, yet unusual shape, the Princess Cut has many fans…

A Cushion Cut Diamond has larger facets than a Round Brilliant Diamond, which means that it sparkles in a different manner. This cut makes the light reflect back in all directions, which makes it a mesmerizing choice.

The Emerald cut Diamond is a step cut stone, with fewer facets,
which means that it does not reflect light in the same way as a Round Diamond. With focus on the shape and clarity, the Emerald Cut is a less sparkly option, but still a classy choice that mainly attracts the vintage lover.

There are several other Fancy shapes and colours of Diamond, but the above pieces are the most commonly found ones. Which one is your favourite?

Lost and Found: SER Jewellery Shoot

In the midst of spring cleaning our computers, we came across some beautiful pictures that have not been shown here on the blog yet.

Artika Sulaiman’s private sale company Sloane Elizabeth Robertson were shooting their lookbook for an upcoming sale and More than Diamonds and Goldilocks offered our jewellery to complete the looks. While on location, we also took a few pictures of our own.

Angela Leow Gray was one of the ‘muses’ chosen for the project. Here wearing a Baroque South Sea Pearl Ring from More than Diamonds.

Goldilocks enters the fashion world… This was at the very start of Goldilocks.

Christmas Greetings

In 2005, after establishing Gold & Silver‘s corporate identity, we were given the task to follow up with an ad campaign. Our Chief Designer Liza Lim wanted something visually stimulating, but without the use of fashion models in order to stand out from everyone else. So we created a series of print ads that featured the essence of one-off jewellery pieces.

The finished artwork is made to capture an emotional response from the jewellery designs, inspired by the kaleidoscope. The results were dynamic and beyond the material, complimenting a creative process that is always evolving. The ‘More than Diamonds’ theme became Gold & Silvers most successful ad campaign since its establishment in 1946. It got published in various magazines throughout the year and got many compliments.

This fifth artwork is our greeting card to you. From all of us at More than Diamonds, have a Happy Christmas and a Custom-made New Year!

Goldilocks™ Doodles – It’s Happy Hour!

We are welcoming a new member to our Goldilocks™ Doodles family. Young (at heart), sophisticated and definitely fun-loving, she is serious about her work and even more committed to a good laugh. Catching up on the gossip with her girlfriends after work, is what gets her up in the mornings. Never one to say no to a party, this girl has her dancing shoes on at all times.

Enter Goldilocks ‘Martini’, on Chain, a twist of White Gold and Peridot, with a dash of fun. We used a Peridot for the Olive, but it can also be changed  into a Diamond Lychee… ;)

Celebrity Engagements: The return of ‘Diana’

The British love their royal gossip, so when Prince William, oldest son of Prince Charles and the late Lady Diana, recently proposed to his longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton, we can only imagine the excitement that the British magazines were experiencing.

William proposed to his Kate – not with a huge Diamond from a private jeweller – but with the same ring that his father used to seal the engagement to his mother, Diana, in 1981.  Since that famous proposal, the setting has become a modern classic and is commonly known as a ‘Diana’ design. Part of royal jeweller Garrard’s collection, Diana picked the ring out herself, thus making the design wildly popular for years to come.

It appears as William and Kate’s engagement has made this design Oh-so-right once again. Sapphire jewellers in the UK and America are reporting a huge surge in enquiries, even in this short time since the engagement was announced.

The classic Sapphire setting with an oval centrepiece surrounded with Diamonds can also be made with Rubies or Emeralds, and are often used in matching earring and pendant designs.

Gold and Silver have collected various pieces inspired by Diana. They will be available at the Gold & Silver Clearance Sale mentioned in previous post.

Creative Director Liza Lim on Jewellery Trends

Those of you who have followed us over the years, will know of our mother-company Gold & Silver (started by Chris’ grandfather back in 1946, and run by his parents, Lawrence and Liza Lim for the last 30 years). Times have changed, our company is evolving. To make room for the new More than Diamonds, we will be clearing all jewellery items from Gold & Silver during our Christmas Sale.

Gold & Silver 20th Anniversary in Paragon

In this process, we wanted to find out more about the jewellery trends throughout the years and what to look out for in future. The clear choice was to go straight to the source, Liza Lim, Creative Director of Gold and Silver, chief designer and purchaser for the last 30 years.

What kind of jewellery has been the most popular throughout the years? Diamonds have definitely been the most popular throughout the years, but a large number of expats and tourists like precious stones like Sapphire and Ruby. They are especially popular to commemorate a special occasion, like child birth or an anniversary.

Liza's jewellery designs grace fashion magazines regularly

What is your personal favourite? I have always liked Jade, because of the beautiful green colour. And as a Chinese, Jade is always close to the heart.

From sketch to ready piece - multi-coloured Jade Earrings with South Sea Pearls

Any recommendations for this sale? Jewellery is very personal and each person has their own taste and preference. When I design jewellery, I make sure that each piece is the best it can be. I select quality gemstones and control the craftsmanship myself. After that, it’s just about finding the person who falls in love with that particular piece.

Have the customers changed since the move from Paragon to Tong Building? Our customers have accumulated since we opened shop in Paragon 25 years ago. Apart from the tourists and passers-by we had in Paragon, we have many loyal customers who have followed us to this new location. Now in Tong Building, the customers generally know better what they are looking for before they even come in.

Liza demonstrating the versatility of her jewellery

What is your speciality? I have designed most of my Earrings and Pendants detachable with versatile wearing in mind. It can be a Diamond stud that you wear on its own for work, and add a South Sea Pearl for a function. There are several pieces that you can mix and match, so that you can wear the colours you need as well as the right level of dressiness to suit the occasion.

Detachable Earrings to suit all occasions

What do people usually buy as their first piece of jewellery? And what comes after? Singaporeans like pampering themselves, so when they come up to a certain age, they like investing in a piece of genuine jewellery. Pendants are often the first choice, although many like rings because they are more visible and easy to wear everyday. Most Europeans will buy a simple pair of earrings as their first piece and wait to buy a ring until they receive an engagement ring.
